Nine

This past weekend Mike and I celebrated our Ninth wedding anniversary. Celebrated may be too strong of a word.

Several months ago, I told Mike how I wanted to celebrate our anniversary. I was very specific. I wanted to go out to eat at my favorite Mexican Restaurant downtown. Then we would go see a movie, in an actual movie theater, not in my bedroom with a movie checked out from the library with the sound turned so low I can barely hear it as not to wake a sleeping child. Then I wanted to spend the night at a fancy hotel. Wake up the next morning, and go to the fancy brunch found at another hotel in the downtown area. Then maybe go hit some balls at the driving range (this was part of the plan so Mike would be excited about the weekend too). Then maybe go see another movie (I'm a little movie theater deprived ok?) Then we could pick up our kids after naps.

I can't tell you how I had been looking forward to this weekend.

Here's how it really went down:
We booked our babysitters. Had a slight scheduling conflict, but it was easily worked out. We researched hotels, and decided we should just stay in our own bed instead. I should've know at that point that things were going to go downhill. Then we picked the movie we really wanted to see. I was really excited about the movie we chose. I thought we could make this a really fun weekend.

Then Lily woke up in the night throwing up every 10 minutes. We went through five blankets. Even after we made her a bed in the bathroom with her head next to the toilet, she wasn't making it there in time. The laundry was incredible. She also mentioned that her throat hurt. Which made me think Strep Throat. A trip to the doctor in the morning, confirmed my suspicions. My babysitters no longer wanted to watch my children. I didn't blame them. But, we figured we could at least rent a movie and enjoy eachother's company that night.

Later on in the day, Lily (now feeling much better, but still contagious) said "mom, the floor in the playroom is wet - I DIDN"T DO IT!" My heart sunk. The other side of the wall held our water heater. A quick check, and the water heater had a slow drip off the back side and a fast drip off the front side. I tried not to panic as I informed Mike, and tried to find my dad, who would know what to do. He did. "Looks like we are replacing a water heater tonight" my dad said. He and my sweet mother came over about an hour later, about the time Mike came home from work, and began working on changing out the water heater. The left about 11:30 pm. We went to bed.

The next morning my dad called up and informed us that the reason our water heater went out (other than the fact it was over 15 years old) was because we had a bad water pressure valve. It also needed to be replaced. He told me he would be coming over that morning to help us replace it. And replace it we did. After a little fishing around behind some drywall, 3 hours later, all was well. We ordered pizza for dinner. I also wasn't feeling great by that evening and went to bed at 8:30. Maggie chose that night to take a break from sleeping through the night.

I think my folly was in being so specific about how I wanted to celebrate my anniversary. Mike says we'll celebrate later, but that's what he said about my birthday...

Oh geez--isn't this just how life goes??? I'm so sorry your plans didn't work out! Hopefully things will fall into place soon.

Oh, and by the way--just another confirmation that we are kindred spirits. Your description of your perfect night away fits mine exactly! And I'm pretty sure we'd both pick the same favorite mexican restaurant downtown. (:

Sad! I heard your water heater went out but I didn't know it was on your big weekend and that everyone got sick!

That is just too darn sad! I will babysit your kids anytim...if it's not in the next few days just send them to Boston and we will give them the royal treatment!

Why does that sound so familiar? I've decided it's no use even planning on celebrating birthdays/anniversaries until the kids leave home:) I always feel movie theater deprived too--make sure you at least get a movie in to make up for the anniversary flop:)

I completely identify with the "we'll celebrate later" disappointment...I'm still waiting for my 30th birthday party. Good luck rescheduling...I'll keep my fingers crossed.
