I dare someone to post more about their hair than I can

Anyone who really knows me, knows that I am exceedingly vain about my hair. I always have been. Which makes it an interesting paradox that I will sometimes go more than 4 months between haircuts. And even longer since I have had my highlights touched up. Is it still considered "touching up" your highlights when it's been 7 months since you had them done?

My hair was looking so bad, that on the morning of my little brothers wedding, I got the scissors out and began cutting my bangs. That might not seem like such a bad thing, except I had let my bangs grow completely out. It's not like I was following the pattern of the previously, professionally cut bangs. I was cutting new ones. I had seen pictures of myself over Christmas, and I didn't like what I saw. I decided that I didn't want all the pictures of me (oh there would be so many, I was sure) to look so awful and bang-less. My husband found me happily clipping away, standing over a bathroom sink full of hair. He informed me, we needed to leave 10 mintes later to get to the wedding on time.

The next day I made an appointment for a haircut. The only problem with that, is my stylist is usually booked at least 2 weeks out. It was a long wait. But the day finally came, and boy was I happy.

I love getting my hair cut. Makes you wonder why I don't do it more often. Well, it's expensive! And far away. Why do I go somewhere so expensive and far away? Because I've had the same stylist for 10 years, and I like him. Yep, a guy cuts my hair. His name is Val. Nope, not gay either. He's married with 2 kids. He's even kind of famous. Did you ever watch those Seminary movies where they would go back and forth between Book of Mormon and Modern times? He was in "The Armor of God." He's the guy who can't go on a mission. He acted in a bunch of church movies after his mission. Again, I digress.

I love getting my haircut. I love spending 2 1/2 hours in a chair, with someone paying attention to me. I don't have to do anything for anyone else. No one is yelling at me to get them a cup of milk, or to fix a toy. I just get to sit there. The scalp massage is the best. The money is worth it just for the scalp massage.

I love the way I feel after he's done. My hair, freshly colored and styled. It makes me feel all fancy, like a movie star. I love feeling like a movie star. I love having my bangs cut by a professional (they look way better).

I usually have Mike take a picture of my hair later that day, just so I can remember exactly what it looked like after Val has done my hair. I think it's easy to forget. It's nice to have photo documentation. That way, I don't glorify the way he did my hair, and demonize my own abilities as much. I also can show him how I want my hair cut again, if I miraculously want to stay with the same style for more that 2 cuts in a row.

Mike had to go to study group last night, and I didn't get him to take my picture before he left. So, I attempted to take a self-portrait. Why do I always look so horrible in self portraits? It must be the angle. Does anyone do this well? If they do, please come teach me how to take my own picture. I would like there to be some photo documentation that I really did exist. My poor children are going to have no pictures of their mother.

Anyway, here is my self portrait. Please don't laugh and mock me endlessly. This is taking more courage than you can possibly imagine for me to post. And sadly, the lighting in the room and the angle from which I was shooting, make it so you can't even see my haircut. Also, remember that I am 22 weeks pregnant. And I'm not photogenic. Any other excuses I can come up with?

I love it! And, yes, a scalp massage and 2 1/2 hours of relaxing salon time is worth every penny, it's almost like being at the spa.

I LOVE Val! I can't thank you enough for recommending him to me. The problem now is I have never found anyone that can live up to his standard. So I just don't get it done until it looks so bad that I am embarrassed to go out in anything other than a ponytail. Then I think "I'll just make an appointment to go see Val when I go to Utah", but I don't. Then when I finally go somewhere, I look truly atrocious and am embarrassed.
